If you've fallen for the Swiss Cheese Monstera, you are not alone. With its playful hole punched leaves and vine like growth, Monstera adonsonii is one of the most charming houseplants around. Whether it is climbing a moss pole or cascading from a shelf beside your favorite books, it brings a lush tropical vibe to any room. (I actually have a fairly large vine growing in my African Bullfrogs tank!)
Here's how to keep your Swiss Cheese Monstera Happy:
Light: This monstera loves bright, indirect light. A spot near an East or North facing window works beautifully. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
Tip: If the leaves start turning yellow or developing crispy edges, it may bet getting too much sun. On the other hand, slow growth, lack of holes, and small leaves could indicate it is craving more light.
Water: The Monstera prefers moderately moist soil, but they don't like soggy roots.
Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry
Drainage is key- use a pot with holes and a well-draining mix
Cut back on watering in the winter when growth slows.
Tip: If the leaves droop slightly, it may be asking for water. They usually perk back up within a few hours of a good drink.
Humidity: Native to the humid rainforests of Central and South America, this plant thrives in medium to high humidity. Mist occasionally- especially in drier months. A pebble tray or small humidifier nearby can make a big difference.
Soil: Use a loose, well-draining potting mix, such as
1 part potting soil
1 part perlite or orchid bark
1 part coco coir or peat
Repot every 1-2 years to refresh the soil and give the roots more room.
Growth Habits and Support: Montera adansonii is a natural climber.
you can let it trail from a hanging basket or train it up a moss pole or trellis
Climbing encourages larger leaves with more pronounced holes!
Prune leggy vines to encourage bushier growth.
Whether its trailing off your bookshelf or climbing a moss pole in your reading nook- or happily growing in a reptile tank- the Swiss Cheese Monstera is easy to care for and endlessly rewarding. With the right conditions, it'll grow fast- and may even become your favorite plant buddy.
